Purple Heart Veteran and Pooch to be Honored by Canine Companions

U.S. Army Captain James Van Thach, a wounded Iraqi war veteran wil be honored for his service and bravery at Canine Companion's second annual Wag n Wheels event.

Van Thach paired with Liz, a lab/golden retriever mix, as part of Canine Companions's  Wounded Veteran Initiative. The organization  Canine Companions provides highly trained assistance dogs to children and adults with disabilities. Van Thach and Liz will be on hand on Sunday at Smithtown Toyota to be honored with the group's Volunteerism Award.

The day will be filled with family fun events, carnival games and a pie eating contest. Future service dogs will be on hand for attendees to meet. The event runs from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Leashed dogs are welcome at the event. 

Smithtown Toyota is located at 330 East Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown.
