Inwood Is NYC's Most Annoying Place To Be On July Fourth: Study

Looking for a quiet Fourth of July? You probably won't find it in these New York City neighborhoods, a new study found.

INWOOD, NEW YORK -- Those who like peace and quiet may want to avoid Inwood and Washington Heights Wednesday, according to a new study that found the neighborhoods pull New York City's most noise complaints on the Fourth of July.

Despite New Yorkers' reputation for deserting the city on Independence Day, the holiday saw more 311 complaints of loud music and parties than any other date for the last five years, according to a study released Saturday by Localize.city, which offers buyers and renters quirky data on their neighborhoods.

The city saw nearly 2,000 noise complaints on July 4 last year, more than three times its daily average of 550, according to the study.

The annoyance was highest in Inwood and Washington Heights, which ranked first and second, respectively, on last year's list. Both saw roughly one noise complaint for every thousand residents on the Fourth of July, nearly five times the daily average reported in each neighborhood, the study found.

Some hot spots for complaints in Washington Heights were Ellwood and Arden streets, both of which are less than a half mile from Dyckman Street's notoriously loud restaurant strip, according to the report.

“The noisy hot spots may change year-to-year as parties move around, but one thing is clear: wherever the party goes, many New Yorkers wish it went somewhere else," said Steve Kalifowitz, president of Localize.city.

Despite Inwood and Washington Heights being the most annoying neighborhoods, the Bronx came out on top when Independence Day complaint rates were broken down by borough, followed by Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens. Despite seeing five times its usual noise complaints last year, Staten Island still came in last, the study found.
