Wash Heights Council Race: De La Rosa Apparent Victor, Report Shows

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — Carmen De La Rosa looks to have defeated challenger Guillermo Perez Tuesday night in the Democratic primary to represent Washington Heights and Inwood in the City Council's 10th District, according to NY1.

Here's where the voting tally stands as of 10 p.m., according to NY1, which has place a green check mark next to De La Rosa's name.

  1. Carmen De La Rosa: 86.9 percent (4,639 votes)
  2. Guillermo Perez: 13.1 percent (701 votes)

The tally so far represents 93 percent of voting machines in the district, according to the Board of Election's website showing unofficial results.

The City Council's 10th District represents the majority of Washington Heights and the entirety of Inwood, stretching from around 165th Street to the end of the northern tip of Manhattan.

De La Rosa was elected to the uptown seat in 2021, but only for a term of two years due to a provision in New York City's charter that changes the term length in the City Council every 20 years to allow new challengers under new parties.

She was a local Assembly member before moving to the City Council.

Perez lists his platform as taking back the community from "uncaring developers and greedy landlords," fighting to save small businesses, and helping working families "achieve the American Dream."
