CHARLOTTE, NC — The continued pace of online shopping is prompting FedEx to dramatically expand its workforce in the Charlotte metro region, the shipping giant said this week.

FedEx is set to hire 1,600 new employees for positions at ground stations in Charlotte, including a new station in North Carolina, the company announced.

"As the economy rebounds and with the continued uptick in demand for online deliveries, FedEx Ground is looking to add thousands of positions throughout the U.S. in the coming months," a FedEx spokesperson told Patch. "The biggest hiring needs are for package handlers."

The new positions in Charlotte include part-time and full-time package handlers to load and unload packages.

Job benefits for the positions include competitive wages with day, night and weekend shifts available; benefits; paid parental leave and employee discounts on purchases, such as cell phone service, groceries and car purchases.
