Police Peacefully Deescalate Armed Standoff In North Charlotte

The armed man who threatened to harm himself was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation, and was the second such incident this week.

CHARLOTTE, NC — A man armed with a firearm who threatened to harm himself during an hours-long standoff with police officers in North Charlotte Thursday afternoon was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for a medical evaluation, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Thursday.

The incident marked the second incident involving an armed person threatening self harm CMPD has encountered this week, according to police reports.

Officers responded to the 9900 block of Perimeter Station Drive, off W.T. Harris Boulevard, around 2:30 p.m. Thursday after receiving a call regarding "a subject who was armed with a firearm and threatening to commit suicide," CMPD said.

"Upon arrival, officers located an adult male that was in possession of a firearm and refusing to comply with their requests," CMPD said. "Officers immediately evacuated the surrounding area and initiated dialogue with the subject in an attempt to peacefully de-escalate the situation."

Representatives of CMPD Operations Command, Community Policing Crisis Response Team members, SWAT, Medic, and the Charlotte Fire Department responded to the scene.

Officers negotiated with the man for several hours. He later surrendered peacefully before he was transported to an area hospital for evaluation, police said.

"No officers fired their weapons during this incident," police said.

Tuesday evening, CMPD peacefully deescalated an armed standoff in the 9200 block of Albemarle Road.

"Upon arrival, officers located an adult male subject who was armed with a firearm and was threatening to kill himself. Officers immediately evacuated the surrounding area and initiated dialogue with the subject in an attempt to get the subject to disarm and let the officers help him through his crisis," CMPD said in a statement.

While officers attempted to keep the man talking, he fired rounds into the ground, "then returned the firearm back to a position pointed at his own head," CMPD said.

He never pointed his weapon or fired at officers or bystanders, police said, adding, "No officers fired their weapons during this incident."

"Through continued dialogue with the subject, the subject eventually put the firearm down and complied in being taken into custody by the officers on scene," CMPD said. "Officers and Medic transported the subject to an area hospital to be medically evaluated and to determine the next steps of mental health treatment."
