CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte Department of Transportation is implementing their snow and ice plan as the forecast calls for winter weather this weekend.

According to the 2021-2022 Ice and Snow Plan, the first step is pretreatment. That involves laying down salt brine on 155 bridges and 1,198 miles of roads. Salt brine is a combination of salt and water.

Afterward, teams evaluate the weather conditions and then follow up their response depending on the level of severity.

If the area gets light snow and ice, they have nine routes that focus on making sure 249 bridges and other vulnerable areas are safe first. In the event it's moderate, there are 16 routes and all trucks set out to treat all routes. In the worst case scenario, they contract help.

Charlotte residents are advised not to call 911 about snow blocking businesses or causing a dangerous situation and instead should call 311 to report issues that could result in collisions or property damage.
