National accreditation renewed for Marietta Main Street (newsandsentinel.com) — Downtown Marietta just secured another year of national accreditation for Marietta Main Street, opening doors to more grants, resources, and advocacy for local businesses. Executive director Jen Tinkler says the recognition, now in its 12th year, reflects strong revitalization work and historic preservation, and she’s also inviting residents to the Jan. 17 Ice Festival featuring live ice sculpting on the Armory Lawn.

2. Washington Commission: Santa stops by amid discussion on injection well risks (mariettatimes.com) — Washington County commissioners heard concerns about injection well risks and a proposed three-year moratorium that Marietta City Council has already backed, but declined to ask the governor for such a pause. Local advocates, including a Marietta resident, pressed commissioners about water safety and economic impacts, while an oil and gas representative defended current regulations and disposal practices.

Liam Nuzum signs with Marietta College for golf (wtap.com) — A Warren High School golf standout is staying close to home, signing to play for Marietta College’s Pioneer golf team while majoring in land and energy management. Liam Nuzum, a multi-time All-Southeast District honoree and Academic All-Ohio golfer, says he’s eager for tougher collegiate competition and was drawn by Coach Badgley’s work ethic and familiarity from high school matches.

4. 10 Ohio colleges and universities were not in alignment with the science of reading, audit shows (ohiocapitaljournal.com) — Ohio’s latest audit of teacher training programs found 10 universities out of compliance with the state’s new science-of-reading requirements, while Marietta College is among the schools fully aligned with the standards. The report means future teachers trained at Marietta College should meet the state’s expectations for evidence-based reading instruction that districts are now required to use.
