Here are the top three stories in Marietta today:
- Washington State Community College (WSCC) in Marietta recently celebrated the graduation of 11 cadets from its Peace Officer Basic Academy (POBA). The classes are taught by active and recently-retired peace officers who share their valuable real-world experience to students. According to Joe Browning, WSCC's Director of Public Safety and POBA Commander, 95 percent of the cadets have secured employment contingent upon passing their state examinations. WSCC is currently accepting applications for the next academy, starting on Aug. 14. (Subscription: The Marietta Times)
- Some Washington County volunteer fire chiefs are concerned about the impact of House Bill 509. The bill, also known as the Occupational Licensing and Regulation Bill, was signed by Governor Mike DeWine on Jan. 5 and goes into effect on Apr. 6. House Bill 509 revised multiple regulations around professional licensure and certification, including a requirement for volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel to get trained and certified off-site. Fire chiefs expressed that off-site training is not only more expensive; it's also less feasible for volunteers who may work other jobs during the day. (Subscription: The Marietta Times)
- Police have detained a suspect in a Sunday robbery at the Michael's down the road in Parkersburg. Officials believe the suspect entered the craft store with a gun, demanded money from an employee, and left the store by car after securing an undisclosed sum; Parkersburg officers found the vehicle and suspect shortly afterward on Grand Central Avenue. As of Monday, the department has not publicly released the suspect's name; however, files are expected to be charged. (WTAP)
