MARIETTA, OH — Today President of the Washington County Commissioners Kevin Ritter announced his intent to run for reelection. He will be wrapping up his first 4-year term next year. Ritter's seat will be the only one to be decided next year. The commissioners' 4-year terms are staggered, so Commissioners Booth and Schilling won't be running again until 2024.

Ritter said he's encouraged by all they've been able to do, but there's still a lot left to be done.

"At the beginning of the year I was pretty negative, that was largely because of Covid, but I have forged a relationship with the two other commissioners that's been really positive, and that's allowed us to do some really positive things."

Ritter said he now feels very good about sticking around and doing work for the community.

"The biggest reason is the sewer project."

He said that's what pulled him into the race in the first place.

"It's not completed yet, I'd like to run for a second term so that I could see it through to completion."

Ritter says he's been very encouraged by the support of southeast Ohio's U.S. Congressman Bill Johnson on this very issue.

"I spoke with him last night and it sounds like there's a pretty good chance we'll get funding from Washington."

He says the next steps from here include continuing to work hard for Washington County, perhaps a fundraising event in the fall, and some public speaking events next year.

"I think we've gotten some good things done and I'm looking forward to working with Charlie [Schilling] and Jamie [Booth] and do more great things."
