PITTSBURGH, PA — Penguins starting goaltender Tristan Jarry, whose career has been marked by inconsistent play, was traded Friday to the Edmonton Oilers.

The move appears to be a salary dump.

The Pens dealt Jarry and forward Sam Poulin to the Oilers in exchange for goalie Stuart Skinner, defenseman Brett Kulak and the Oilers' second-round draft pick.

Skinner and Kulak both are under contract only for this current season. That leaves the Penguins only on the hook for the prorated value of their current contracts. Skinner's contract has an average annual value of $2.6 million; Kulak's is $2.75 million.

Jarry is in the third year of a five-year contract that expires at the end of the 2027-28 season. His salary cap hit this year is $5.3 million. Getting that contract off the books should provide the Pens with money to sign potential free agents.

Jarry, a two-time NHL All-Star leaves as the Penguins' third all-time goalie ime in games played, wins (161), and goals against average. He is fourth in save percentage (.909) while his 22 career shutouts are tied for second with Tom Barrasso and behind Marc-Andre Fleury (44).

Skinner, 27, has appeared in 23 games this season for the Oilers and has gone 11-8-4 with a 2.83 goals-against average and two shutouts. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound goaltender has spent his entire professional career with Edmonton, appearing in 197 career regular-season games going 109-62-18 with a 2.74 goals-against average, a .904 save percentage and nine shutouts.

Skinner’s 109 regular-season wins rank fifth in Oilers franchise history while his nine shutouts are tied for fourth.

Kulak, 31, is a veteran of 611 NHL games split between Edmonton, Montreal and Calgary since 2014. The defenseman is coming off of a career year, where he tallied career highs across the board with seven goals, 18 assists and 25 points in 82 games in 2024-25. This season, he has recorded two assists through 31 games.
