The Red Cross opened a regional shelter at the Gaudet Middle School located at 1113 Aquidneck Ave, Middletown.

After the blizzard left most Aquidneck Island residents without power, the Red Cross opened a regional shelter at the Gaudet Middle School located at 1113 Aquidneck Ave, Middletown.  The shelter serves Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth residents.

As of 2:30 p.m on Saturday, 91 people have checked into the shelter, said Red Cross Shelter Manager Carmela Geer.  The shelter has a capacity for 549 people.

She said she is not concerned about turning people away if they reach capacity.  "The one cool thing about this team, is they will figure it out," said Geer.
