Man's Body Recovered Near Goat Island: Newport Police

Newport police confirmed a report a man's body was pulled from waters near Goat Island. No foul play is suspected at this time.

NEWPORT, RI — The police on Thursday confirmed a man's body was pulled from the water near Goat Island. Newport police and the Coast Guard at Castle Hill Station said the identification is being withheld pending family notification. No foul play is suspected at this time, but the body has been turned over to the state medical examiner, who will determine the cause of death.

The Coast Guard public information officers at Woods Hole and in Boston said the Newport Police are in charge of the investigation.

Lt. Frank Rosa, of the Newport police, issued a statement Thursday night. He said the initial call at 12:06 p.m. reported an unconscious person in the water just off the docks at the Goat Island Marina, Defenders Row, Goat Island.

"Newport Fire Department arrived on scene also," Lt. Rosa said, "and the male person was subsequently pulled from the waters. He was determined to be deceased at this time." Lt. Rosa confirmed the initial investigation indicated no foul play, but said the protocol, which requires the state medical examiner to determine the cause of death, is being followed.

Gail Mastrati, spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Management, referred questions to the Coast Guard.
