Newport City Council To Consider Letter On Armory Sale Wednesday
The council could approve a letter of intent to sell for $1,685,000 to the Sailing Hall of Fame, but without advertising the property.

NEWPORT, RI— The city manager on Wednesday will present the council with a Letter of Intent to sell the Armory property at 365 Thames Street. The price would be $1,685,000, and the Sailing Hall of Fame is the buyer.
The official meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers, but there is a pre-meeting at 6 p.m. on the second floor, Newport City Hall, 43 Broadway.
The council has discussed the sale behind closed doors for several months. But word of an impending sale leaked out, and on Feb. 1 the city manager issued a statement to indicate there would be public discussion if the council and the Sailing Hall of Fame came to terms. The Friends of the Waterfront opposes the sale and has started an online petition. More than 2,000 people have signed.
