Newport History Tours Begins This Weekend

A schedule of the Newport History Tours, a partnership between the Newport Restoration Foundation and the Newport Historical Society, announces the Spring 2013 walking tour schedule.

 

The season will begin with Saturday and Sunday tours during April and May, with the full summer schedule to follow in June.

“As the weather warms, especially after the late winter storms, locals and visitors alike are eager to be outside,” said Liz Spoden, Education Assistant with the Newport Restoration Foundation, who co-manages the tour program. “The Newport History Tours provides an opportunity to explore Newport’s Old Quarter neighborhood, learn about Newport’s historic past and enjoy spring in Newport.”

Newport History Tours is pleased to offer a new website design. “The new format is easy to navigate and includes a Google calendar that users can incorporate into their smart phone schedules,” explains Ingrid Peters, Newport Historical Society’s Director of Education. “Beginning in May, and running through the course of the season, we will feature ‘Guide Spotlight.’ Once a month a NHT guide will be featured for their work and contribution to local historical tourism.” The Newport History Tours web address is: www.NewportHistoryTours.org.

The spring 2013 schedule runs April through May and includes:

  • Golden to Gilded -- From Newport’s colonial Golden Age to Gilded Age summer colony, discover the transformation of the city and its people. Saturdays at 10:30am.

     

  • Discover Colonial Newport -- Hear stories of remarkable entrepreneurship and religious diversity during Newport’s colonial period. Sundays, 10:30am.

     

Tours last approximately 75 minutes and are weather permitting. Tickets are $12; $5 for ages 12 & under.

Additionally Newport History Tours will introduce the Tour of the Month. Beginning in April and running through November, on the third Saturday of the month at 11am, Newport History Tours will present a tour on a focused topic by a guest guide. The April specialty tour, Gardening Tour presented by Tim Brown of the Newport Tree Society, will take place on April 20th. Reservations are required as space is limited. Tours cost $15 per person, $10 Newport Historical Society members.
