Newport Man Faces Third Domestic Offense

Shamiel A. Perry, 21, allegedly kicked and damage the door to a woman's apartment on Thursday. A third arrest means the charge is a felony.

NEWPORT, RI—Newport police charged 21-year-old Shamiel A. Perry, of 143 Third St., Newport, with domestic vandalism, third offense—a felony—on Wednesday for allegedly kicking the door of a woman's apartment.

According to a police report, police got a 911 call at around 5:45 p.m. from a woman screaming that her ex-boyfriend damaged the door to her apartment at the Festival Field apartment and she couldn't get out.

Upon arrival, police said Perry was sitting on a wall outside the complex and later told police that he was just trying to get personal items from the apartment. He became frustrated, he said, and admitted banging on the door.

A witness said that yelling and banging could be heard through the walls of the building.

Police said they had difficulty getting a statement from the victim, who gave a terse written statement indicating that Perry kicked her door after an argument.

Based on the statement, the admission by Perry and other witness accounts, police moved forward with pressing the domestic violence charges.

Perry was held overnight for arraignment Friday morning.
