NEWPORT, RI — A Bay State man was charged with two misdemeanors after he and his girl friend quarreled during a night out in Newport, police said. Samuel Valera, 47, of Somerville, Mass., and his girl friend were at the Red Parrot on April 8 when a disagreement started. She left the Red Parrot but alleged he followed her, pushed her into storefront windows, grabbed at her backpack and pulled it away. She continued walking with a plan to return to the Jailhouse Inn, where they were staying, but became lost, she told police. When she did make it back to the Jailhouse Inn, she was crying and the inn staff called police. Officers said she suffered an injury to her hand. Police checked the area around the Red Parrot for broken windows, did not find any but determined the injury was consistent with her account of being pushed into storefronts, although she could not remember how her hand was hurt.
Valera was charged with Domestic Simple Assault or Battery and Domestic Disorderly Conduct. He was arrested at 11 p.m. at the Jailhouse Inn.
