Newport Police Arrest Rape Suspect
Police were called to Pelham Street on Sunday night to stop a "rape in progress."

NEWPORT, RI — A report about a rape in progress Sunday night in the downtown ended with a suspect in custody. Jose Miguel Mejia Gramajo, 30, of Newport, was captured in the Mary Street parking lot Sunday around 11:30 p.m. There was a brief scuffle. Police said people called the police to report he had fled Pelham Street and was in the parking lot.
He will be arraigned in court on a first degree rape charge. He is also charged with resisting arrest.
