Newport Police Charge Alleged Drunk Driver & Passenger

A Providence man and his passenger were charged after a wrong-way turn on Thames Street in front of a police officer early Sunday morning.

NEWPORT, RI A Providence man and his passenger were charged after he attempted a wrong-way turn on Thames Street in front of a police officer early Sunday morning. Kyle Carpenter, 25, was charged with Driving under the influence, first offense. He was also cited for Refusal to submit to a chemical test; Driving without a license (or with an expired license), first or second offense; and one-way highway. He told police he is a truck driver, a relative of a judge and was unfamiliar with the area.

The incident happened around 1:21 a.m.. Police stopped the car at Narragansett Avenue and Spring Street.

His passenger, Athena M. Silva, 20, of Johnston, was cited for being a minor in possession of alcohol. She told police she owned the split of Barefoot wine and another bottle of liquor, which officers found in the car. She also said she had been drinking. Silva said the car belonged to her, but police would not allow her to drive it. They attempted to find a responsible adult to drive it back to Salve, but it was towed when no one was available. Police drove her back to the university.
