Newport Police Giving Free Backpacks, Back-To-School Haircuts

Backpacks will be given to Portsmouth students on a first-come, first-serve basis, from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Sept. 6 at police headquarters.

NEWPORT, RI — The Newport Police Department is partnering with Butler Basketball Club to give away free drawstring backpacks and haircuts to local students on Sept. 6, just in time for back to school.

Vouchers are available at the department's records window. Families will be given one voucher each, unless more than one child is present at the time of pickup. Haircut vouchers can be redeemed at Middletown's Envy Salon at 800 Aquidneck Avenue, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Backpacks will be given to Newport students on a first-come, first-serve basis, from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. at Pell School and from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Chapel Terrace.

Other giveaways will happen throughout Aquidneck Island, including two sites in Middletown:

  • Oxbow basketball courts: 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Ludlow Terrace: 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
