Pell Elementary School In Newport Hires School Translator

New Pell Elementary School translator Andres Guzman speaks Spanish and English. He is also learning Portuguese to help even more students.

NEWPORT, RI — Pell Elementary School in Newport made a hire to help students whose first language is not English.

Newport Public Schools Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain said the district has hired Andres Guzman to be the school's new translator.

"Newport Public Schools is committed to meeting our students and families where they are, and a big part of that means providing translation services for our multilingual families," Burns Jermain said. "That’s why we are excited to welcome Andres Guzman as Pell Elementary’s school translator."

Burns Jermaine said Guzman was born in Brooklyn, New York. He is fluent in English and Spanish and is currently learning to speak Portuguese.

Guzman has been living in Newport for nine years. His interests include snowboarding, playing soccer, and traveling.

With the hire of Guzman, Newport now has three school translators in the district. Thalia Serrano serves as the middle school's translator and speaks Spanish and English.

Ana Gomes is the translator for Rogers High School. She speaks Portuguese, Spanish, and English.
