Skating Rink to Stay at Newport Yachting Center

The return of ice skating last winter at the Newport Yachting Center has paved the way for another season of skating in downtown Newport.

NEWPORT, RI—The Newport Skating Center will return to the Newport Yachting Center next winter after Newport Waterfront Events, which operates the skating rink, and the yachting center's owners have reached a deal.

The future of the skating rink was uncertain last year after the sale of the Newport Yachting Center and subsequent dissolution of the events center that had hosted the Newport Comedy Series, among other popular events.

Newport Waterfront Events managed to secure an arrangement to keep the rink active for another season last winter after negotiating with Scott's Wharf LLC and Peregrine Group LLC.

Scott’s Wharf allowed the rink to return to its old haunt while Newport Harbor Corporation agreed to donate the rink and equipment to NWE.

The success of the rink last year has helped NWE secure another season, said Michele Maker Palmieri, president and CEO of Waterfront Productions, the parent company of Newport Waterfront Events.

"We are thrilled that the Peregrine Group has been generous enough to let us create our winter wonderland once again throughout the 2016-17 skating season in downtown Newport," Palmieri said. "Our community outreach programs, especially our fundraising drives and free skate and discount programs, touched a lot of lives this past winter while exposing people to the rink who normally wouldn’t have that opportunity. We look forward to bringing family, friends and the community together again next winter at the Newport Skating Center.“
