Teen Arrested At Newport Group Home: Police

The teenager was arrested for smashing a telephone, police allege. The group home told officers it's their policy to press charges.

NEWPORT, RI—Police were called to the group home on Girard Avenue on Tuesday (May 22) to charge a 16-year-old girl with vandalism. Her name is not being published because she is a juvenile. According to the police narrative, the girl expected to be taken to a doctor's appointment in Portsmouth. She had been waiting a long time for the appointment. But the group home staff refused to take her to the doctor's office. The reason was she came downstairs late, and the doctor has a strict policy not to see late clients. The teen was upset. She grabbed a telephone, ran outside and smashed the phone on the driveway. The group home insisted on pressing charges, police said. They have a policy to press charges whenever property is damaged, police said.
