Volvo Ocean Race Arriving In Newport: What You Need To Know

The racing village at Fort Adams is open to the public Tuesday with free admission and lots of exhibits, plus the Coast Guard's tall ship.

NEWPORT, RI — The Volvo Ocean Race is headed for Newport. The racing village officially opens Tuesday at Fort Adams. But the boats are expected anytime between Monday and Wednesday. For sports enthusiasts, Team Brunel holds the lead Saturday morning at 7 (Universal Time Coordinated, which used to be Greenwich Mean Time). But Dongfeng is right alongside, and Vestas 11th Hour Racing is close. They're about 1,000 miles away.

Newport is the only North American stopover, and it should be a good time. The weather forecast promises sunshine. The admission to the racing village at Fort Adams is free. Here's what you need to know. The state park is at 90 Fort Adams Drive, Newport, 02840.

The experts see it as a close race. Newport's Charlie Enright is Vesta's skipper, and "the team has leverage for the upcoming wind shift and gybe and is hoping to sneak around the front of the two leading boats," according to the Volvo Race's reporter Peter Rusch.
