📰 News we're reading

1. UWM professor is fighting superbugs in Milwaukee and around the world (uwm.edu) — A UWM biomedical sciences professor is tackling antibiotic-resistant “superbugs” right here in Milwaukee, from monitoring drug-resistant bacteria at local beaches and waterways to studying safer wastewater reuse tied to Lake Michigan. His lab’s work, backed by major EPA and federal grants, could shape how Milwaukee treats wastewater, protects swimmers, and guards public health while also influencing global approaches to infectious disease.

2. Feds want to see Milwaukee County transit's plan to stop fare evasion (jsonline.com) — Milwaukee County transit officials are under federal pressure to show how they’ll curb fare evasion and improve safety or risk losing some funding. With an estimated one‑third of riders skipping fares, millions in lost revenue, and a looming 2026 deficit, county leaders are weighing more deputies and security staff on buses while responding to new demands from Washington.

3. Wisconsin DOT installs new wrong-way detection systems to prevent crashes (wisn.com) — New wrong-way detection systems are being installed at six Milwaukee freeway ramps, adding radar, cameras, and flashing signs to warn drivers and alert police. After recent high-profile wrong-way crashes, these upgrades will bring the Milwaukee area to 26 protected locations, including key I-43 and I-94 interchanges many residents use daily.

4. Fire at Milwaukee assisted living center contained quickly (jsonline.com) — A small fire at an assisted living facility on Milwaukee’s north side was quickly contained Friday evening, with sprinklers and firefighters limiting injuries and damage so residents could mostly return home. The incident is renewing attention on Milwaukee’s many older high-rises that still lack sprinklers, as city leaders push state lawmakers for authority and funding to require upgrades.

5. Associate Vice President for Public Affairs Rana Altenburg to retire from Marquette (marquette.edu) — A longtime Marquette University public affairs leader who helped secure hundreds of millions for nearby infrastructure and campus projects is retiring at the end of 2025. Her work has shaped Milwaukee’s Near West Side, from the Marquette Interchange and local corridors to anchor-institution partnerships that connect the university more deeply with surrounding neighborhoods and government.
