MALDEN, MA — City and business leaders gathered earlier this month in Malden to celebrate the opening of Rock Spot Climbing’s new local bouldering gym.

Rock Spot already had six other locations in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island before it recently opened in Malden, moving into a site at 195 Exchange St.

City officials shared photos of a ribbon cutting on Thursday of last week.

Bouldering is a form of climbing that allows climbers to scale shorter walls without rope systems suspending them. Bouldering facilities have large mats to cushion a climber’s fall if they slip off their wall.

The sport has grown in popularity in recent years, joining the slate of summer Olympic sports in 2021 with the Tokyo Summer Olympics.

“Whether you are new to the sport or a seasoned climber, Rock Spot gyms are warm, inviting and a place to reach new heights,” last week's announcement from Malden officials said.

While Rock Spot’s Malden facility is exclusively focused on bouldering, other area locations offer a mix of bouldering space and traditional climbing with ropes.

Rock Spot in Malden is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday hours run from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
