Somerville Allocating Resources To Fight Food Insecurity
The mayor is using government funds to strengthen meal and grocery resources.
SOMERVILLE, MA — The city is allocating nearly $1 million to address food insecurity throughout the city, Mayor Katjana Ballantyne announced.
$975,000 of Community Benefits Stabilization Funds is being used to fund multiple initiatives including food pantries, Carrot Cards that can be used by those with students enrolled in the school district to acquire food, community meals, meal voucher programs for local restaurants, grocery shopping assistance to seniors and homebound residents, and the Congregate Meal Transportation Program which brings hot food to certain sites throughout the city.
Local organizations the city says will directly benefit from the financial support include the Somerville Homeless Coalition, Shepherd's Kitchen, Elizabeth Peabody House, Food for All, Connexion faith community, East Somerville Main Streets, Food for Free, and Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services.
