SOMERVILLE, MA — A former United States Postal Service mail carrier pleaded guilty to a theft charge in federal court on Friday, the United States District Attorney’s Office announced.

Resident Michael Vernon, 52, pleaded guilty to one count of theft of mail by a postal officer or employee. He was first arrested in September after more than 1,000 pieces of undelivered mail and 17 bottles of pills prescribed to 10 different postal customers on Vernon’s route were discovered in his personal vehicle. The medications discovered were used to treat ailments such as nerve pain, seizures, diabetes, high blood pressure, enlarged prostate, depression, anxiety and ADHD. Some of the medications dated back to 2022.
