Somerville Unveiling Significant Park Addition This Week

The city converted nearly an acre of space into the park's newest addition.

SOMERVILLE, MA — The city is set to officially unveil the newest addition to one of its most popular parks later this week.

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and Ward 5 City Councilor Naima Sait will lead the ribbon-cutting ceremony at Junction Park between Central Street and Centre Street on Friday, Nov. 14. The one-hour event will begin at 12 p.m. in which the new acre of space that was once asphalt will be revealed. The park additions include a seating platform overlooking the MBTA trains that pass below, interpretive signs with historic information, native plantings and shade trees, walking paths, a hammock grove, and stations for water bottle refilling and bicycle repair.

The Somerville Community Path stretches more than three miles and connects the city to Cambridge and Boston. The Junction Park project was primarily funded through Community Preservation Act funds, American Rescue Pan Act funds, and a Parkland Acquisition and Renovation for Communities state grant.
