Berkeley To Mark The 100th Anniversary End Of 'The Great War'

The World War I recognition ceremony will be held on Nov. 9 at Veterans Park, mayor says

BAYVILLE, NJ - The end of World War I finally came when an armistice was signed in a railroad car in a French forest, near the front lines, according to Smithsonian.com.

"The terms of the agreement called for the cessation of fighting along the entire Western Front to begin at precisely 11 a.m. that morning," the post states. "After over four years of bloody conflict, the Great War was at an end."

Berkeley Township officials and members of the military will mark the 100th anniversary of that moment precisely at 11 a.m. on Nov. 9 at Veterans Park in a "recognition ceremony," Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said.

"In recognition of this significant event and in remembrance of the Veteran's Day holiday, the Non-Commissioned Officer Academy - Fort Dix will conduct a commemoration ceremony at the local veteran's park with members of the military and local personnel in attendance," he said.

They will dedicate a Swamp White Oak Tree donated by a local nursery, a commemorative plaque donated by the local VFW post and a park bench, donated by the township, the mayor said.
