John Joseph Sullivan Jr., Berkeley Detective, Dies At 64

A Memorial Service for the well-regarded Berkeley police officer will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday

John Joseph Sullivan, Jr., passed away at his home on Tuesday Nov. 28, 2017 after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 64.

Throughout his life, John served as a law enforcement officer in Seaside Heights and Island Heights and finished his career as an officer and detective with the Berkeley Township Police Department.

His love of intellect, education and the sciences were evident throughout his life. He received his masters degree of arts in behavioral sciences from Kean University in 1992. John continued his education in interviewing and interrogation at John E. Reid & Associates and also obtained over 20 certifications through his law enforcement career.

His passion for his profession led him to become noted as an expert in non-verbal communication and an instructor and educator at the Ocean County Police Academy, Ocean County College and Brookdale Community College. He taught a variety of courses, including Profiles of Violent Crimes and insights into Serial Murderers.

John was a devout Christian and lived his life sharing his love and his testimony with those he could help. He embodied a great sense of humor and was a sincere, devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and friend.

John is predeceased by his father John J. Sullivan, Sr. and his nephew, James Sullivan. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary Sullivan; his daughter Marlene Sullivan and her two daughters London and Reylin; his mother Rosemary Sullivan; his sisters, Roseann Sullivan, Colleen Ballentine, Cathleen Sullivan Krause and Peg Sullivan and his brother Jim Sullivan; along with many relatives and dear friends.

The family will receive friends for a memorial gathering from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday December 2, 2017 with a service at 4 p.m. at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 706 Rt. 9 Bayville, NJ. Committal will be private. Condolences may be sent by visiting www.ryanfuneralhome.com.
