Legendary Berkeley Detective John Sullivan Jr. Dies Of Cancer

Sullivan shared his investigative craft with many officers around the country.

BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ - There's more sad news from the Berkeley Township Police Department.

Longtime Detective John Sullivan Jr. died on Nov. 28, after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer, according to a post on the police department's Facebook page.

His death was the department's second loss this month. Sgt. Alison J. Wray died on Nov. 1 of complications from a stroke.

Detective Sullivan was a lifelong Bayville resident. He began his career as a patrolman in 1979. He was later promoted to the detective bureau, where he quickly became a legendary investigator. He retired in 2004.

Sullivan was well known for his investigative and interrogation skills during his time on the force. He was also an instructor at the Ocean County Police Academy and taught college courses.

"Detective Sullivan mastered the art of interview and interrogation and taught his talent to thousands of police officers all over the state and country," the post states. "Detective Sullivan was well-known and respected in his profession and proudly represented the Berkeley Township Police Department."

He was the son of former Berkeley Township Deputy Police Chief John Sullivan, "...and like his father, John will be remembered as a legend who left a proud and positive mark on our agency and our profession."
