Are Shorter LIRR Ticket Expirations Fair?

The LIRR Commuter Council is , which shortens the amount of time a ticket is valid when it is not checked on board a train and adds a processing fee when customers return tickets for a refund.

The is one of the most active on Long Island. It was one of the first stops built on the Island back in 1841 and today hundreds of commuters use the station to get to the city daily.

"In the past ten months the reaction to these changes from both regular commuters and occasional riders has been overwhelmingly negative," said Mark Epstein, chair of the LIRR Commuter Council. "We find that these new policies have caused inconvenience, confusion, financial hardship, and frustration for LIRR riders. Riders are now reluctant to purchase tickets for future trips due to the risk of being left with a worthless ticket or being forced to pay a refund processing fee."
