Farmingdale PetSmart Reopens After Canine Flu Outbreak

Eight dogs infected at PetSmart care services; all are reported to be recovering.

The Farmingdale dog day camp and hotel reopened Tuesday following a canine flu outbreak, a chain representative confirmed.

Eight dogs enrolled in the PetSmart care services were diagnosed with canine flu last week, which closed the day camp on Nov. 14 and the hotel on Nov. 18, said spokeswoman Michelle Friedman.

"We did a thorough disinfecting of the entire facility," Friedman said. She added that all dogs who were in the hotel are not permitted to return until 14 days after their last visit.

The eight dogs infected are recovering and PetSmart is paying for their treatment. Friedman said symptoms of canine flu include wet cough and less energy and that the flu is often mistaken for kennel cough.

"A vast majority of dogs fully recover," she said.
