From 1999 to 2016, he was the lead metro columnist for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, where his work won numerous national, state and local awards. He's the former president of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists and current president of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists Education Foundation, which provides scholarships to collegiate newspaper columnists. Heyl lives in Pittsburgh with his wife and two daughters.
